The effect of temperature on the permeability of beetroot cells Essay Although an apparent trend is illustrated by the experimental data plotted, I am reluctant to formulate a valid conclusion on the effect of temperature on the permeability of beetroot cells due to the variability of the results obtained.  Although five repeats were performed, the data collected is not reliable because of variation within the sets of results. This could have been due to various limitations of the experiment. At 30oC for example, the reading for absorbance of light in arbitrary units, was 0.12%. When compared to the results collected from other repeats at this temperature, this appears to be an unusually high value. Further examples of possible anomalous data were 0.03% at a heat treatment of 40oC together with 0.06% at 50oC. If these anomalous results were not included in the mean absorbance plotted, this could have had a significant effect on the overall conclusion. For example, had the reading at 40oC not been included in the mean, the reading plotted at this temperature of heat treatment may not have been lower than the mean result plotted at 30oC, as is shown on the graph by a slight dip. This means that one cannot be sure whether absorbance of light by the solution at 40oC does indeed decrease when compared to the previous reading. The range bars can be seen to overlap for the remaining temperatures of heat treatment, which means that it is hard to say within the error of the apparatus, what the exact value is. I am reluctant to draw a valid conclusion from the experimental data due to the significantly large percentage range at each temperature of heat treatment. At 60oC for example, the percentage range of the data from each repeat is approximately 300%. The limitations of the experiment lead one to question the precision of the experimental data and the conclusions drawn from them. A mechanised cutter was used to produce pieces of beetroot with the same cross sectional area. It was made certain that we cut downwards so that the bores did not converge. However the beetroot samples were not all of the same length. This could result in the beetroot discs having different surface areas and so causing different volumes of anthocyanin to leak out into the surrounding medium at each repeat of every temperature. This source of inaccuracy would have contributed to the variation and unreliability of the results and could be avoided through a technical improvement in the experimental design. When the discs were impaled on to a mounted needle, a small volume of dye leaked out from the damaged cells. This could not be measured and could have been potential dye lost into the medium, thus affecting the majority of readings for the absorbance of light. To overcome this source of unreliability, the beetroot discs could have undergone heat treatment in a fully permeable bag.  The reliability of the results can be questioned because no accurate method for shaking the solutions before they were poured into cuvettes was employed. The resulting intensities of the solutions could therefore have been incorrect. To avoid this source of inaccuracy a mechanical technique could be used to shake the solutions. The scales of the apparatus employed influenced the results obtained. For both 70oC and 80oC a reading of 2.00% was recorded. This was not the actual absorbance of light by the solutions at these temperatures because the scales of the colorimeters did not exceed 2.00. As a result the mean value plotted was inaccurate, thus any conclusions drawn from the data are unreliable. The experiment should therefore be re-planned using either fewer disks, reducing the time periods the samples of beetroot were left in water for or alternatively leaving the discs in increased volumes of water for 20 minutes. The scale of the colorimeter was only accurate to 0.01%. This may have affected the results at 30oC and 40oC, where there was a 0.01 difference. To overcome this source of imprecision and therefore unreliability the scale of the colorimeter used could be altered to give a reading correct to three decimal place. Although it is not certain whether using different colorimeters would have had any affect on the readings obtained, to ensure precision of the experimental data, the same colorimeter should be used to measure the absorbance of light by the solutions. Although a graduated pipette with 0.1cm3 markings was used to measure 6cm3 of cold tap water, to ensure high precision of the experimental data, apparatus with finer divisions could be used. This would allow a valid conclusion to be drawn from more accurate results.  In order to improve the precision of the experimental data, a digital stop clock could be used. The usage of a manual stop clock meant that there were slight variations in the incubation and staggered timings, and even slight variations in timing would introduce a high percentage area. A one-minute delay in removing the disks from the test tube following heat treatment for example would result in an error of 5%.  Further improvements that would provide considerable additional evidence for the conclusion would be to investigate an increased number of temperatures including a wider range between 50oC and 60oC, as an increased number of intervals would show exactly where the phospholipid bilayer of beetroot melts.

How Stevenson Explores the Nature of Good and Evil in the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde The story is about a doctor called Jekyll who has an alternate identity called Hyde. Until the last two chapters it is told from the view point of Mr Utterson; a friend of Jekyll’s who is trying to piece together the story. It uses features of gothic novels such as doppelganger which is an alternate identity. It also uses multiple narratives to make the reader think, it also helps the reader solve the case themselves, and piece the story together, from the evidence given. To a certain extent Stevenson also uses the monster feature in the form of Edward Hyde. In this novel, Stevenson was trying to show that good and evil are not separate within us but are a combined part of us so instead of trying to split them we should except the unity and only then will we be able to make our good side prevail in the struggle of good and evil. One of the features of a gothic novel used is the haunted house. Authors of gothic novels use a character’s house to reflect the characters psychological manner. In this story Jekyll’s house is described as being â€Å"grand and having an air of wealth and comfort†. This mimics Jekyll’s personality as he is portrayed for the reader,† a large, well-made, smooth-faced man†. The description â€Å"smooth-faced man† gives the impression that he is not only hiding his age but also the secrets that come with age. We get the impression that he has something to hide right at the beginning of the story; I believe that through this Stevenson gives us a hint that Jekyll has some thing that he wants to keep hidden. His house however has a backdoor which is described as â€Å"blistered and distained†. This, .. ...mic society by using the split personality of Jekyll and Hyde, which is emphasized by the two entrances to his house, to show the mixed views of people from that time period. He also voiced the fear of most of the society through his monster Hyde, who is created through science but cannot be controlled. I believe not only does he express the fear of science going wrong, he also expresses the view of not playing God, by showing that man might not be able to permanently control what he creates, which is shown by Jekyll loosing control of the transformation to Hyde. He also tries to explain that the good and evil parts of us are what make us who we are and instead of trying to separate them and risk losing control we should embrace them and try through our actions, to let the good side prevail instead of using science to destroy us while trying to do well.

Line Between Tough Love and Child Abuse Essay

Poets and authors have tried to define love for centuries, whereas scientists have only recently started. Many of us know intuitively that love is a major purpose for living; (Blueprint, 2013) that connection is inherent in all that we do, and without love, we cannot survive as a species. But what is love, and how do we know when we’re in it? First , let’s start off with what love isn’t. If someone asks you to do or say something that isn’t in your nature, that isn’t true love. Smith, 2002) Although love does involve compromises between partners, someone who is in love with you will never ask you to change who you are in order to be loved. True Love is caring. The ancient Greeks had many different names for different forms of love: passion, virtuous, affection for the family, desire, and general affection. But no matter how love is defined, they all hold a common trait: caring. (Blueprint, 2013) True Love is attractive. Attraction and chemistry form the bond that allows people to mate. Without this romantic desire for another individual, a relationship is nothing more than lust or infatuation. True Love is attached. Like the mother-child bond, attachment comes after the initial attraction. Attachment is the long term love that appears anywhere from one to three years into a romantic relationship (sometimes sooner and very rarely after), and you’ll know you’ve found it when you can honestly say, (Smith, 2002) â€Å"I’ve seen the worst and the best you have to offer, and I still love you,† while your partner feels the same way. True Love is committed. When it comes to true love, commitment is more than just monogamy. It’s the knowledge that your partner cares for you and has your back, no matter what the circumstances. People who are strongly committed to one another will, when faced with seemingly negative information about their partner, see only the positive. For example, a friend comments that your partner doesn’t say a lot. â€Å"Ah yes, he’s the strong, silent type,† you reply. People with less commitment to their partner would instead say something like, â€Å"Yeah, I can never have conversation with him. It’s annoying. † True Love is Intimate. Intimacy is a crucial component of all relationships, regardless of their nature. In order to know another, you need to share parts of yourself. This self-revealing behavior, when reciprocated, (Teicher, 2000) forms an emotional bond. Over time this bond strengthens and even evolves, so that two people merge closer and closer together. Intimacy by itself if is a great friendship, but compiled with the other things in this list, it forms an equation for true love. Within the minimum standards set by CAPTA, each State is responsible for providing its own definitions of child abuse and neglect. Most States recognize four major types of maltreatment: physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Although any of the forms of child maltreatment may be found separately, (Blueprint, 2013) they often occur in combination. In many States, abandonment and parental substance abuse are also defined as forms of child abuse or neglect. The examples provided below are for general informational purposes only. Not all States’ definitions will include all of the examples listed below, and individual States’ definitions may cover additional situations not mentioned here. Physical abuse is no accidental physical injury (ranging from minor bruises to severe fractures or death) as a result of punching, beating, kicking, biting, shaking, throwing, stabbing, choking, hitting (with a hand, stick, strap, or other object), burning, or otherwise harming a child, that is inflicted by a parent, caregiver, or other person who has responsibility for the child. Perry, 2002) Such injury is considered abuse regardless of whether the caregiver intended to hurt the child. Physical discipline, such as spanking or paddling, is not considered abuse as long as it is reasonable and causes no bodily injury to the child. Neglect is the failure of a parent, guardian, or other caregiver to provide for a child’s basic needs. (Perry, 2002) Neglect may be physical (failure to provide necessary food or shelter, or lack of appropriate supervision), medical (e. g. failure to provide necessary medical or mental health treatment), educational (e. g. , failure to educate a child or attend to special education needs), or emotional (e. g. , inattention to a child’s emotional needs, failure to provide psychological care, or permitting the child to use alcohol or other drugs). These situations do not always mean a child is neglected. Sometimes cultural values, the standards of care in the community, and poverty may be contributing factors, indicating the family is in need of information or assistance. Teicher, 2000) When a family fails to use information and resources, and the child’s health or safety is at risk, then child welfare intervention may be required. In addition, many States provide an exception to the definition of neglect for parents who choose not to seek medical care for their children due to religious beliefs that may prohibit medical intervention. Sexual abuse includes activities by a parent or caregiver such as fondling a child’s genitals, penetration, incest, rape, sodomy, indecent exposure, and exploitation through prostitution or the production of pornographic materials. Sexual abuse is defined by CAPTA as â€Å"the employment, use, persuasion, inducement, enticement, or coercion of any child to engage in, or assist any other person to engage in, any sexually explicit conduct or simulation of such conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conduct; or the rape, and in cases of caretaker or inter-familial relationships, statutory rape, molestation, prostitution, or other form of sexual exploitation of children, or incest with children. Emotional abuse (or psychological abuse) is a pattern of behavior that impairs a child’s emotional development or sense of self-worth. This may include constant criticism, threats, or rejection, as well as withholding love, support, or guidance. Emotional abuse is often difficult to prove and, therefore, (Teicher, 2000) child protective services may not be able to intervene without evidence of harm or mental injury to the child. Emotional abuse is almost always present when other forms are i dentified. Abandonment is now defined in many States as a form of neglect. (Perry, 2002) In general, a child is considered to be abandoned when the parent’s identity or whereabouts are unknown, the child has been left alone in circumstances where the child suffers serious harm, or the parent has failed to maintain contact with the child or provide reasonable support for a specified period of time. Tough love simply means that if your child decides to do anything that can harm him/her or others that you have to love your child enough to take a stand against that behavior. If this means that you have to report your child to the authorities, whether the law or teachers, then you need to do it. It also means that if you find that you need help with your child for whatever reason that you should ask for it. There is nothing shameful about having a child who is out of control. It happens to the best of parents. What would be shameful is not to do anything. The fastest and best way to implement tough love techniques with your child is to simply start making them fully responsible for their own actions. (Blueprint, 2013) Don’t pay or legal representation, don’t bail them out with teachers, and don’t interfere in the natural consequences that may happen. Sometimes, you may even need to go further in the case of a child putting others in danger via drinking or drugging and driving. Take the car, take the money, take the phone, remove all privileges, and if that doesn’t work, you may have to call the police on your child who is pract icing illegal behaviors. Don’t give multiple warnings and threats. (Teicher, 2000) Teenagers just stop believing you, if you don’t back up your words with actions. Giving natural consequences a push in the right direction can go far in helping your child, while you’re still there for emotional support as long as they’re doing the right thing, can help a child straighten their life out before they are on their own. Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse and neglect, also leave deep, lasting scars. The earlier abused children get help, the greater chance they have to heal and break the cycle—rather than perpetuate it. By learning about common signs of abuse and what you can do to intervene, you can make a huge difference in a child’s life. While physical abuse is shocking due to the scars it leaves, not all child abuse is as obvious. Ignoring children’s needs, putting them in unsupervised, dangerous situations, or making a child feel worthless or stupid are also child abuse. Regardless of the type of child abuse, the result is serious emotional harm. An estimated 905,000 children were victims of child abuse or neglect in 2006 (U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2008). While physical injuries may or may not be immediately visible, abuse and neglect can have consequences for children, families, and society that last lifetimes, if not generations. The impact of child abuse and neglect is often discussed in terms of physical, psychological, behavioral, and societal consequences. In reality, however, it is impossible to separate them completely. Physical consequences, such as damage to a child’s growing brain, can have psychological implications such as cognitive delays or emotional difficulties. Psychological problems often manifest as high-risk behaviors. Depression and anxiety, for example, may make a person more likely to smoke, abuse alcohol or illicit drugs, or overeat. High-risk behaviors, in turn, can lead to long-term physical health problems such as sexually transmitted diseases, cancer, and obesity. This factsheet provides an overview of some of the most common physical, psychological, behavioral, and societal consequences of child abuse and neglect, while acknowledging that much crossover among categories exists. The immediate emotional effects of abuse and neglect—isolation, fear, and an inability to trust—can translate into lifelong consequences including low self-esteem, depression, and relationship difficulties. (Teicher, 2000) Researchers have identified links between child abuse and neglect and the following: In one long-term study, as many as 80 percent of young adults who had been abused met the diagnostic criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder at age 21. These young adults exhibited many problems, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and suicide attempts (Silverman, Reinherz, & Giaconia, 1996). Other psychological and emotional conditions associated with abuse and neglect include panic disorder, dissociative disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and reactive attachment disorder (Teicher, 2000). The National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being recently found children placed in out-of-home care due to abuse or neglect tended to score lower than the general population on measures of cognitive capacity, language development, and academic achievement (2003). Children who are abused and neglected by caretakers often do not form secure attachments to them. These early attachment difficulties can lead to later difficulties in relationships with other adults as well as with peers (Morrison, Frank, Holland, & Kates, 1999). Not all victims of child abuse and neglect will experience behavioral consequences; however, child abuse and neglect appear to make the following more likely: Studies have found abused and neglected children to be at least 25 percent more likely to experience problems such as delinquency, teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, drug use, and mental health problems (Kelley et al. , 1997). A National Institute of Justice study indicated being abused or neglected as a child increased the likelihood of arrest as a juvenile by 59 percent. Abuse and neglect increased the likelihood of adult criminal behavior by 28 percent and violent crime by 30 percent (Widom & Maxfield, 2001). Research consistently reflects an increased likelihood that abused and neglected children will smoke cigarettes, abuse alcohol, or take illicit drugs. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as many as two-thirds of people in drug treatment programs reported being abused as children (2000).

Violence1 essays There are many different views on how violent films and music affect people. Personally, I believe violent films and music do not affect people, but some studies show they do. There are also various reasons why people want to see violent films, and why artists and producers continue to produce violent films and music. From the article Film Violence and Subsequent Aggressive Tendencies, they write that even in the 1920s and 1930s people were affected by watching and reading things containing violent behavior. The authors write that media violence induces crime and juvenile delinquency. Through their experiments, when a film is being watched, the emotional state of the audience plays a big role. When preschoolers watched the aggressive behavior of adults in a movie, they later reacted to mild frustrations. Violence in films does not just affect youngsters, but people of all ages. In the same study Lovaas and Walters experimented with the same idea. Their final conclusion was that, stimuli presented on the movie screen can arouse previously learned aggressiveness habits, producing overtly hostile behavior. As you can see through these experiments, people can and sometimes do react to violence in films. Most often, however, people do not react to the violence in films and music. People who have been raised properly and who have word structure will most likely not react to the violence that is put out there on films and in music. On the other hand, if you were raised in a violent situation with faltering vocal structure, violence could majorly affect you. Aggression is normal in all of us. While that makes for great TV, those examples are not true in the real world (except for the coffee part). Interns have now become an essential ingredient for success. They’re fresh, energetic, and willing to learn. These are just a few reasons why you might want to consider hiring an intern. Behind every successful team is a great intern who’s eager to gain knowledge and experience from what you have to offer. All you need to do is find the right candidate that fits well with your team. Easy, right? Maybe not, but don’t worry. We’ll teach you everything we’ve learned and show you how to hire an intern the right way.  First, well bring in Nathan Ellering, our Content Marketing Lead, to talk about the hiring process. How To Hire A Marketing Intern That Will SucceedWhy You Should Hire An Intern, According To Nathan Ellering Why you need an intern may seem obvious. However,  you and your intern will accomplish more if you clearly define one set of responsibilities and  projects that they’ll take ownership of: What daily tasks could an intern become an expert at? The trick is to find a balance between passion for the type of work you’re going to offer an intern and the tenacity that will help them succeed as an individual member of your team. Grit, ambition, and determination cant.At , that requires a multi-phased intern interview process: Sourcing and applying: This is when you actively search for candidates who may have had internships in your industry in the past, or are majoring in the kind of work you’d like help with. Share your posting on local college job pages, search for them on LinkedIn, and syndicate your listing to sites like Indeed. Review every application to determine if there’s a passion for what your intern will do before you even speak with them. Intro interview: This is an informal meeting, either in person or over the phone. The goal is to ask basic questions to gauge candidates’ interest, experience- even if it’s just through classwork- and long-term career goals. It’s a nice opportunity to ask questions like: â€Å"Why are you pursuing your degree?† â€Å"What do you want to do after college and even a few years after that?† â€Å"Why do you want to work with us?† Watch out for purely â€Å"learning† answers to that last question; ultimately, you need your intern to do meaningful work and not just learn. Hiring packet and example: If an intern candidate makes it past the intro interview, ask her to fill out a personality quiz to help you understand how she may work best. A list of projects the intern will complete, along with commentary on your expectations on what the outcomes of those projects will look like. From here, help them learn how to work with your team to complete those projects. Ask your intern to review the process with the entire team to improve the project process: What went well? What went wrong? What should we improve? That’s it! Now, Ill tell you what your intern needs to succeed, based on what weve learned at . In order to have a successful intern, you need make them feel like they are part of the team because well- they are. How do you do  this? Meetings:  Hold daily meetings to sync with your team and intern. Projects:  Give your intern more  opportunities  to learn,  by including them in team projects. Team activities: Allow your intern to be a part of team activities and exercises. Ready to become an expert? Let’s jump in! 1. Holding Daily Sync Meetings Here at , we hold a Scrum meeting every morning before starting our work day. Scrum is a daily meeting everyone attends. These are informal touch points, and they are effective with small teams who collaborate on projects together. What better way to make your intern feel at home than to have them be a part of your scrum meetings. The intern gets a first-hand look at what the team is working on and also how they can contribute. By including an intern in scrum meetings, they are able to understand the status of a project and can ask questions or express concerns. How can you incorporate your intern into meetings? Set a specific time for scrum meetings every day. This way your intern can develop a daily work routine. Discuss what projects you are currently working on with the team and what tasks the intern needs to have completed with set deadlines. Ask what each member of the team is working on, including your intern. This way they can bring up any roadblocks or questions they may have regarding the project. 2. Make Your Intern A Part Of Your Team Projects Remember why your intern is really there- to learn. The best way to learn is by doing. If your team has any current project in the works, make it your goal that the young individual is a part of the strategy or at least has some sort of task involved. Providing valuable projects he or she can take on, even if it’s just a small piece of a larger project, can be a great way to learn. Be sure to offer your intern opportunities that enrich your company and their career growth. Some marketing tasks your intern could tackle include: Social Media: Young professionals are creative geniuses at social media. You’d be surprised at what knowledge they hold regarding social media. Research: Interns are either in school or fresh out of school, so they are magical wizards at researching topics quickly and efficiently. Writing: You may already have a content writer, but consider giving your intern a piece of content they can write and perfect (such as this blog post I am writing). Plus, who couldn’t use an extra set of hands? Mistakes will be made on both sides, but that’s the beauty of it. It’s a learning experience for you and your intern. Use this experience to further develop your management skills. So here is a little advice that will go a long way 1. Don’t Be Afraid To Give More It’s better to have more than to not have enough when it comes to an internship program. You want your intern to gain a great deal of knowledge from all the experience they’ve learned. If they are doing one simple task over and over they will become very bored. Don’t be afraid to challenge your intern and have them do something out of their comfort zone.Don’t be afraid to challenge your intern and have them do something out of their comfort zone- like writing a blog post or a landing page- they might thank you for it. You should set aside some time each day to check in with your intern. Have a more formal touch point about once a week to keep them informed about upcoming projects and to ensure they have a clear direction of their current project. 2. Create A Friendly Environment As a mentor, you need to create an environment that makes an intern feel comfortable. Don’t just stick them in a room by themselves and hope they are learning. Unhappy interns will not want to be part of a team that doesn’t appreciate them. You and your intern will be spending a lot of time together, so it’s important that they are comfortable enough to ask questions or chime in when they have suggestions. It’s also important to build a relationship with an intern so that YOU’RE comfortable enough to ask questions. Ask them where they would derive the most value for their time spent with you, and seek to arrange a project in the areas that most interest and drive them. If your intern is doing a great job, let them know! Providing words of encouragement will make the individual more productive and continue to thrive. 3. Look At Mistakes As Lessons Learned I can guarantee that there will be mistakes made- from both ends. Use these mistakes as a learning opportunity for the future. If your intern is drowning in confusion, it’s up to you to jump in and save them. The intern you picked likely passed up on a summer full of road trips or a fall full of pumpkin spiced anything to work for your company. Always remember that they want to be here and shouldn’t be taken for granted. Aim to be a mentor your intern can learn from and look up to. Take the time to answer questions, and teach new concepts so that you can avoid future hiccups. You’ll even learn a thing or two yourself during the entire process, whether it be better ways to manage or smarter ways to complete certain tasks.
